SUMMARY:My Field for Dummies - Bat Niches
DESCRIPTION:Come join Dr. Phillip J. Oelbaum for his talk entitled “Niche Interests: Understanding Ecological Niches of Bats”! Dr. Oelbaum is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at York University in Toronto\, Canada. His research uses isotopes to study trophic positions of bats in a community context with a focus on tropical species\, what they eat\, and how they interact with each other and their environment. The talk will be available FREE via Zoom on 05 November 2025 at 9 AM Eastern US Time\, and will be made available for viewing afterwards on the GBatNet YouTube channel. The talk is appropriate for all levels of expertise\, including those who are new to the field and want to learn more about how they may plug into this type of research.

DESCRIPTION:Come join researcher and author Dr. Alyson Brokaw for her talk entitled “Sights\, Scents\, and Sounds: The Sensory World of Bats”! Dr. Brokaw is a professor at Cedar Crest College in Pennsylvania where her research focuses on the intersection between behavioral ecology and sensory biology; how bats and other mammals use sensory information during foraging\, decision-making and navigation. Dr. Brokaw is also passionate about science communication and outreach and published her book “The Weird and Wonderful World of Bats” in 2025. The talk will be available FREE via Zoom on 04 February 2026 at 9 AM Eastern US Time\, and will be made available for viewing afterwards on the GBatNet YouTube channel. SUMMARY:Forest Management and Bats
DESCRIPTION:Come join researcher and PhD Candidate Katie Fitzgerald for her talk entitles “Bats and Forest Management”! Katie is currently working with Dr. Joy O’Keefe in the Human-Wildlife Interactions Lab\, focused on research that facilitates the coexistence of wildlife and humans in human-altered landscapes. Katie’s Ph.D. research focuses on monitoring the health of Indiana bats (Myotis sodalis) to determine whether forest management practices affect populations. Katie has also worked with bats in southern Mexico\, Borneo\, and Madagascar and California Condors in the desert Southwest. The talk will be available FREE via Zoom on 04 March 2026 at 9 AM Eastern US Time\, and will be made available for viewing afterwards on the GBatNet YouTube channel.
